This project at Arthur Boyd’s Shoalhaven property in NSW sought to find alternative
to the monumental nature of Glenn Murcutt’s education centre which, as a typical
modernist form, perches itself above the landscape, disconnecting from the site
through an ordered hierarchy of the built form over environment.
Using Boyd’s layers of landscape, recurrent themes and attempting to better
engage with the site, subterranean gallery spaces, artist studios and libraries
are connected to the river at various levels, where the lawn which is the platform
on which the existing education centre dominates, is pulled as a carpet over the
‘metamorphosised’ organic forms presenting a distinct dialogue between
the two buildings.
